Te āhua o te tūranga | The nature of the position

Wheako Pōneke Experience Wellington is looking for a transformative leader to join our Executive Leadership Team in the role of Kaihautū on a part time basis.  This 20 hour per week role will lead our organisation with a Te Ao Māori view, responsible for the continued implementation and upholding of our Māori Strategy, Tūhono Ake. As a key leader you will be able to help shape and guide kaimahi within the organisation ensuring we are committed to upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. 

 

The role will help build and nurture strong relationships with mana whenua, guiding staff and ensuring we appropriately follow tikanga, and kawa within our mahi. This role includes providing support to our curators, including Māori curators and staff, in their mahi, offering guidance and assistance to ensure the success of their projects.

Te tūranga | The role

  • Shape the organisation’s future of embedding Te Ao Māori into our mahi, bringing kaimahi along the journey with you. 
  • Advise, educate and empower the organisation on appropriate and well-rounded alignment to key Te Ao Māori concepts, such as Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga, kawa, and others as appropriate. 
  • Identify and take advantage of opportunities for kaimahi to engage meaningfully with these concepts to strengthen the organisation’s understanding and implementation.
  • Empower people and project leaders in our organisation to build and maintain meaningful relationships with mana whenua, Māori organisations and leaders in this space. 
  • Advise, educate and empower kaimahi who develop and deliver our experiences to accurately and respectfully uphold the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, tikanga, kawa mātauranga Māori and other key concepts as appropriate.

 

Ngā tino pūkenga me ngā wheako | The essential skills and experience for the role

  • Proficiency in Te Reo Māori, as well as Te Ao Māori concepts. 
  • Proven track record of supporting the implementation of Te Ao Māori development in an organisation.
  • Proven track record of successful capability shifts within an organisation in line with their strategic vision and available resources.
  • Proven track record of working in a cultural capacity within an organisation.
  • Bring with you an established network of mana whenua connections, cultural leaders and Māori organisations and institutions to enhance our organisation’s and kaimahi relationships with these groups. 
  • Experience leading work across a functions-based structure to ensure a seamless, mahitahi approach to your mahi and that of your team.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
