As Kaituruki, you will:
- Lead and inspire the programme team to design and deliver high-impact initiatives.
- Work alongside the Mātanga Hāpai Ahurea to foster cultural and creative excellence.
- Ensure collaboration with pūkenga ringatoi, hapori, and stakeholders.
- Manage risks and ensure timely reporting for funding and internal reviews.

Overview
The Kaituruki is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, creative direction and operational support to the Programming team. They ensure the successful design, delivery, evaluation and promotion of programmes that align with Toi Ngāpuhi’s mission, while fostering collaboration and engagement with pūkenga ringatoi, hapori and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Creative Programme Direction
- Lead the programme team in the design and delivery of programmes, ensuring alignment with Toi Ngāpuhi’s strategic work plan.
- Work closely with the Mātanga Hāpai Ahurea to design a programme that inspires cultural, creative and learning excellence
- Maintain oversight of all programmes, fostering collaboration between internal teams, pūkenga ringatoi, hapori and other stakeholders.
- Identify and manage risks associated with programme delivery, escalating issues where necessary.
- Oversee the evaluation and reporting of programmes, ensuring timely completion of reports for funding applications and internal review.
- Facilitate regular programme team meetings and individual check-ins to maintain alignment and morale.
Project Management
- Design and facilitate the annual Minenga, ensuring high engagement and positive feedback from all participants.
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee special projects and events, ensuring high-quality execution and positive feedback from attendees and team members.
- Ensure all project documentation, timelines, and reports are completed accurately and on schedule.
People Management
- Lead and support the Programming team, ensuring they have the necessary resources and guidance to achieve their objectives.
- Conduct monthly check-ins against 90-day plans to monitor and support team progress.
- Facilitate team development through structured performance reviews, goal setting, and professional development opportunities.
- Manage team leave and workload distribution to ensure consistent programme delivery.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work with the Kaiwhakahaere Matua to build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders.
- Develop and implement an annual stakeholder engagement plan, ensuring collaboration supports organisational sustainability and programme growth.
- Regularly review stakeholder engagement strategies, delegating responsibilities to team members where appropriate.
- Manage and coordinate stakeholder groups, ensuring effective communication and engagement.
- Represent Toi Ngāpuhi professionally in all external and internal meetings and networking opportunities.
Operational & Compliance Responsibilities
- Promote the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensuring engagement processes meet the needs of Māori in a culturally appropriate and safe manner.
- Ensure strict adherence to the Privacy Act 1993, maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of programme delivery.
- Uphold Toi Ngāpuhi’s health, safety and wellbeing policies, ensuring compliance with workplace safety regulations.
- Foster an inclusive, ethical and legally compliant environment, encouraging safe work practices and proactive hazard management.
- Assist with other programmes and duties as required by the Kaiwhakahaere Matua, ensuring organisational needs are met in a flexible and proactive manner.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Relevant degree and/or experience in programme design and delivery, arts and event production or a related field.
Highly skilled and effective communicator with excellent listening, oral and written communication skills.
Creative thinker with a passion for fostering artistic and cultural initiatives, particularly for ngā toi Māori and Māori art in Te Taitokerau.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and partnership development.
- Strong organisational, project management and problem-solving skills, with high attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative, working independently while also taking direction as needed.
- Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing demands, including attendance at programmes and events as required.
- Familiarity with Te Taitokerau arts, artists, community and cultural landscape.
- Te Reo and tikanga competency.
- Professional attitude with integrity, honesty, and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- Holds a valid and clean drivers’ licence.
- Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its application in programme delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
High proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), databases and social media tools.
