Founded as a capping stunt at the University of Auckland in 1969, 95bFM is now the oldest student radio station in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and is the biggest independent broadcaster in the country. For nearly six decades, 95bFM has become an icon of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s cultural scene, and is a national leader in music, news, independent media, and culture.

We’re looking for someone to join our team who can help maintain our position at the forefront of independent broadcasting, and who has an understanding of 95bFM’s perspective and values. We need someone with a broad passion for news and journalism, who believes in the importance of diverse viewpoints and the power of local representation, and someone who can work to mentor our next generation of news reporters and journalists.

PURPOSE:

  • Responsible for maintaining excellence in all 95bFM News & Editorial presentation, setting our news & editorial agenda in line with our stated goals, and managing all News & Editorial volunteers.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage a team of volunteers to adapt broadcast news pieces into written, video, and visual digital news content in line with the station's digital strategy, and oversee the publishing and promotion of these pieces across the 95bFM website and social media platforms.

  • Set the station's news and editorial agenda each day; covering the stories we want to highlight, and ensuring a culture of fact-checking and direct sourcing.

  • Source, train, and mentor news department volunteers to the agreed 95bFM skill level and standard, including regular scheduled air-checks, reviews, and ad-hoc feedback.

  • Manage the roster of news readers, writers, and on-air presenters, ensuring all spots are filled with a mix of experience levels, and help develop bFM-relevant stories across multiple shows and days, including text/audio on 95bfm.com.

  • Ensure that the correct show, bio, and on-air information for The Wire hosts and News & Editorial feature contributors are on the 95bFM website and other online platforms.

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining cloud resources for the News & Editorial team, such as a contacts/talent database, Studio 3 / mobile recorder bookings calendar, and audio pronunciation guide.

  • Oversee the setup and management of news shifts, providing training and feedback for volunteers to repackage content for online platforms, and ensure The Wire hosts’ (or nominated volunteers) podcasting (full show and individual features/interviews) are uploaded promptly.

  • Work constructively with the sales department to help secure appropriate sponsors for features, and occasionally generate other editorial ideas that may have income opportunities.

  • Be available for volunteer induction evenings monthly and ensure that News & Editorial volunteers are up to speed with required levels of studio systems, including Zetta, LinkStudio, Modica (texts), CMS, and phones.

  • Expand 95bFM News coverage into print on 95bFM.com and ensure 95bFM’s commitment to Te Reo through regular and appropriate use, with an emphasis on pronunciation and correct context.

  • Collaborate with the Programme Director to create and implement a competitive digital strategy and a reference document for all News & Editorial volunteers.

  • Develop the 95bFM News brand online, including creating visual assets and ensuring editorial voice and journalistic values are upheld across digital news media.

  • Challenge 95bFM to consider innovative approaches to news delivery and ensure that all News & Editorial volunteers feel part of the wider volunteer and station family.

  • Work with the Programme Director, Breakfast team, and Drive team to filter requests/pitches for interviews and coverage through to the most appropriate show, ensuring cohesion across the 95bFM roster and avoiding content duplication.

  • Seek out appropriate industry figures for regular talks/training sessions for volunteers and ensure the use of 95bFM historical interview archives for story updates, anniversaries, and other purposes.
