Founded as a capping stunt at the University of Auckland in 1969, 95bFM is now the oldest student radio station in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and is the biggest independent broadcaster in the country. For nearly six decades, 95bFM has become an icon of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s cultural scene, and is a national leader in music, news, independent media, and culture.
We’re looking for someone to join our team who can help maintain our position at the forefront of independent broadcasting, and who has an understanding of 95bFM’s perspective and values. Someone with a broad passion for music, who believes in the importance of diverse viewpoints and the power of local representation, and someone who can work to mentor our next generation of DJs, volunteers, and broadcasters.
PURPOSE:
- Overall responsibility for on-air operations of 95bFM, including music policy, announcers,
volunteers, events, news and editorial direction, commercial integration, and creative policy. - Develop the strategic direction for 95bFM programming in collaboration with the General
Manager and 95bFM Board of Directors, and implement this direction operationally. - Proactively lead all the on-air team by example, to ensure the best possible presentation for
95bFM, and acknowledge that most of our team are volunteers but balance this with reasonable expectations of commitment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Playout Software & Scheduling:
- Daily scheduling of the programming logs within our playout software.
- Loading and placing pre-recorded shows.
- Training volunteers in playout software use.
Music Booking:
- Act as the station's live music booker alongside the Events Manager.
- Take advice on artist suitability, and work to set briefs for station events.
- Prioritise NZ On Air Music requirements and work to event process deadlines.
Playlist Management:
- Listen to music submitted to 95bFM and prepare for playlist consideration.
- Actively source non-submitted music for playlist consideration.
- Maintain, support, and enforce 95bFM’s playlist including the voluntary local content quota of at least
30% NZ music.
- Set, maintain, communicate, and review music policy covering playlist, DJ free choice, and specialist
shows.
- Ensure all current on-air programmers are able to submit new music for on-air playlisting each week, in
line with the station’s ‘playlist by democracy’ charter for show hosts/DJs to ensure the on-air playlist
reflects the station’s current programme.
Volunteer/DJ Management:
- Ensure all volunteers complete key tasks, such as podcasting, within accepted timeframes.
- Manage volunteers in video production, editing, and audio archiving projects.
- Train volunteers in playout software use.
- Manage volunteers in the archiving of media libraries, including audio and CD library ingestion.
- Seek out and enlist the best volunteers to create a pool of talent for future roles, including the Programme Director position.
- Mentor volunteers at station events, and act as an assistant to the Events Manager.
Reporting & Compliance:
- Submit reports as required to NZ On Air, RadioScope/Recorded Music NZ, the Student Radio Network (SRN), and APRA AMCOS NZ.
- Manage all required scheduled reporting regarding 95bFM’s content.
- Create and regularly update the station’s broadcasting policy document ('The bFM Bible').
- Manage any complaints to the station within set deadlines, treating complainants with respect, and
keeping the General Manager informed.
Internal Communication & Collaboration:
- Manage direct reporting roles to fulfil their tasks in line with 95bFM expectations.
- Keep 95bFM staff and volunteers up to date with any and all on-air changes.
- Be available for, and contribute to, station meetings and volunteer induction evenings.
- Regularly review systems and processes to ensure 95bFM takes advantage of these systems to best
fulfil objectives.
On-Air Support:
- Seek, train, and mentor all on-air announcers to the agreed 95bFM skill level and on-show requirements.
- Perform regularly scheduled air-checks and reviews, and provide ad-hoc feedback.
- Be the first point of contact after-hours and weekends for technical or other issues, and arrange for a
backup person when unavailable.
- Contribute to the creation of the 95bFM archive.
Promotion & Audience Engagement:
- Identify and create 95bFM promo content, including ‘gold’ content/interviews, promos of new show hosts and features, and whole-station promotions.
- Ensure correct show, bio, and on-air information is on all online and on-air assets at all times.
- Work with the station sales department to secure appropriate sponsors for shows and features, and
generate and communicate editorial ideas with income opportunities.
- Increase audience engagement across all bFM platforms on-air, online, and in-person.
- Challenge bFM on all tasks and initiatives for continuous improvement.
REMUNERATION:
- Salary: $63,283.27 per annum.
NOTE: - This is a fulltime role, with the expectation that the Programme Director is the first point of contact after-hours and weekends for any technical or other issues.
- You will need to be a great communicator, highly motivated, and self-directed, and be able to work closely with the diverse and passionate team at 95bFM.
- Prior experience with CRMs, CMS, and programming software such as Zetta, GSelector, RCS News, and Aquira are advantageous.
