City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi is returning to its heritage home in Te Ngākau Civic Square, in the heart of our capital city. To mark this moment, we invite proposals from New Zealand artists for a new site-specific sculpture on our Sculpture Terrace.
The sculpture offers a rare opportunity to create a contemporary landmark that will engage thousands of pedestrians on Harris Street and offer a striking visual experience from inside the Gallery’s Reading Room. This is the first time this site will be used for sculpture and will form a new view of City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi.
New Zealand artists are invited to submit proposals for innovative, dynamic, and durable public sculptures. The sculpture must stand up to the force of Wellington on a good and bad day – wind, salt, rain and shine. The sculpture stands to be a placemaker – a defining feature of the building.
*Please note the sculpture terrace is not the roof top where Ronnie Van Hout’s previous sculpture Quasi was located.
Proposals close Monday 2 February 2026, 5pm
