Rangatahi – awake your creative spirit and dive into this opportunity.

Eleven Residences for 2025 at The Factory Theatre / Kete Aronui

Development Residencies x 10

Supported by Sky City Community Trust

Audience Development residency

Supported by The Alexander Harold Watson Charitable Trust

What?

He Waka Eke Noa Charitable Trust will offer 11 Residencies throughout 2025 (ex January and December) to rangatahi-led creative groups or solo rangatahi performers. Rangatahi, for the purposes of the 10 SkyCity Residencies, has been defined as those that are no longer in school through to the age of 34.

By reducing systemic barriers that face our young arts community through empowering and enabling rangatahi Māori and Pasifika arts practitioners, along with other often disenfranchised groups, irrespective of gender, sexuality or ethnicity, who will have equitable access to fit-for-purpose, safe and accessible facilities, to create and collaborate, explore genre and produce outcomes that see you and your communities reflected through your own stories and art. It doesn't have to result in a final performance, more-so be focussed on having a safe accessible space to explore an idea or concept with financial burden.

Why?

He Waka Eke Noa Charitable Trust was established to  facilitate arts access and to inspire arts practitioners and audiences, irrespective of social, economic or geographic isolation.

Our Vision?

  1. To prioritise the important place of Tāngata Whenua of First Peoples of Aotearoa by honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  2. To support diversity and inclusiveness in the arts through agency, advocacy and opportunity.
  3. To empower the well-being of the arts community through sustained support and guidance.
  4. To lead the change, the growth and the development of the arts in Aotearoa by providing mentorship, opportunities and facilities.

How?

  • There are 10 residencies for development of work, and one residency focused on audience development for you or your organisation.
  • The Audience Development residency needs to be at a further stage of development, heading towards a season at the theatre.
  • Any genre of performance is considered. There is a focus on Māori and Pacific practitioners, but plenty of room for all.
  • The project has to be Rangatahi led.
  • No budget is required.
  • Priority will be given to those projects which currently exist without funding, although this is not a reason not to apply as we will consider all in context.
  • We will support:
    • 20 - 30 hours - Kete Aronui for creation.
    • Time in The Factory Theatre for pack in, tech, dress rehearsals + presentations/performances with tech support.
    • Presentations may be part of a showcase of works with other residents.
    • Additional staffing support provided by He Waka.
    • Flexibility to ensure your goal is achieved, i.e. more creative time over presentation time.
    • The Audience Development residency will include additional marketing and tech support.

Industry leaders will assess the applications and make the invitations for a chat.

When?

The residencies take place in 2025 from February to November, being split evenly so we have the capacity to support each one.

Applications are now open and close mid January. Those that make our shortlist will be invited to come in and have a chat with us, and look around the spaces. It’s important that the key creatives in your group attend this. There will be 5 residences in the first half of 2025, and 5 in the second half.

The Audience Development residency time frame is negotiable.

Great – what do I do now?

To apply: Go to this form for one of the 10 development residencies, and this form for the audience development residency.

Don’t worry, it’s simple and straight forward and doesn’t involve you giving up your first born to us to proceed. We want you to engage and feel comfortable in the process. We’re not looking for how well you write prose, rather the idea itself and what you want to gain out of it.

Expressions of interest must be received by EoB Monday, January 20th for consideration by the end of the month.

So get to it.
