Leading Maori musicians, producers, agents and record labels have launched a National Maori Music Industry Coalition to coincide with NZ Music Month.Members of the Coalition range from artists as diverse as Hinewehi Mohi, Ardijah and K. Lee, Producer Phil Fuemana, and Distributor MaoriMusic.com.

'Maori talent has long been acknowledged,' says Coalition spokesperson Moana Maniapoto. 'But we believe that Maori now need to move away from being mere players in the industry to fully participating in determining its strategic direction.'

While artists of Maori descent feature heavily at this years Tui Music Awards, kaupapa Maori music remains confined to the 'Maori' categories.

'Industry mentality sees kaupapa Maori music as fulfilling a cultural need,' says Moana Maniapoto. 'But artists such as Hinewehi Mohi have proved the international commercial potential of te reo music. Interagency strategies need to be developed to recognise and support that. The role of the Coalition will be to assist - and insist.'

Initial research by the Coalition suggests that Maori are under-represented at the governance and management levels of the most significant music related agencies in Aotearoa. And are not using those agencies anyway - something the NZ Music Industry Commission admits.

'The Maori Music Coalition is long overdue and it is something the NZMIC welcomes,' says Commission Project Director, Arthur Baysting.

The Coalition is conducting a series of workshops with Maori to determine a collective vision for the Maori Music Industry. The next hui will be held on June 2 at the Toi Maori convened Pao Pao Pao Festival.
