A crowd favourite and an established performance season, 2010 Made in New Zealand celebrates NZ Music Month with new dance works by New Zealand choreographers, and tours this April/May from Invercargill to Auckland.

Featuring Purlieu by Malia Johnston, to new music by Eden Mulholland. Like the earlier work Miniatures it is based on, Purlieu is an exploration of the body’s relationship to small, precious and confined spaces. The work is being presented at the World Expo in Shanghai later this year and is partly influenced by its theme – 'better cities, better living'.

Dancers explore the preciousness and precariousness of space and place as they interact with a constantly shifting landscape of small objects and spaces. The resulting forms, images and physicalities are metaphors for the many ways in which we both affect and change, and in turn are defined and constricted by, the built environments that surround us.

And presenting i changed by Sarah Foster, with music by Andrew Foster,  an introspective exploration of social perceptions where voyeurism, exploitation, exhibitionism and exclusion are all part of a fast moving creation that is guaranteed to provide surprise and excitement onstage.

The programme also features two solo works – a solo by Michael Parmenter (Somebody’s Darling) inspired by the unknown grave at Millar’s Flat, Central Otago and to music by Douglas Lilburn, and a solo by Ross McCormack (Stealth) inspired by the graffiti art of DLT to music by Jody Lloyd.

In the larger venues, Footnote Dance is also thrilled to present MTYLAND, fresh from the New Zealand International Arts Festival. Choreographed by Belgium based New Zealander, Claire O’Neil, MTYLAND was the winner of Best Choreography by an Established Artist or Company at the 2008 Tempo Awards, and has achieved great audience response and critical acclaim. This intoxicating choreography, now reworked, is a moving exploration of the search for calm amid life’s chaos and examines the idea that ‘In Nothing there is Everything… we are making the rules.’

“I liked [MTYLAND] a great deal. Significant contemporary New Zealand dance works like this are, sadly, rare, and with its seamless dancing and production it is strongly recommended to dance lovers.”   Mark Amery, NZ Herald

Footnote Dance is a national contemporary dance company directed by Deirdre Tarrant with dancers Anita Hunziker, Jeremy Poi, Sarah Knox, Francis Christeller, Lucy Marinkovich and Robbie Curtis.
