The University of Auckland Art History Research Seminar Series is about to commence for Semester Two.

The series will kick off on Thursday July 29 with the seminar 'A Short History of Invisibles' presented by Dr Greg Minssale.

A Short History of Invisibles

There are many examples in art where we 'see' the concept the artist intends to convey even though it is not, in fact, visible. The concept is pieced together by the viewer from various perceptual cues configured by the artist.

This seminar examines a short history of these 'non-retinal' sculptures, paintings and installations from Duchamp to Conceptual Art, and provides a framework to understand these 'invisible' concepts using some of the latest cognitive and philosophical methods of mapping concepts.

This cross-disciplinary approach can help us to appreciate how concepts are produced in a dynamic system sustained by neural events, the body's exploratory senses, and art.
