Antarctica New Zealand was established in 1996 to develop, manage and execute New Zealand's activities in respect of the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean, in particular the Ross Dependency. Our vision is one of Antarctica: refreshing global ecosystems and the human spirit. In line with this vision and as part of the development of initiatives designed to advance awareness, appreciation, and knowledge of Antarctica the Artists and Writers to Antarctica Programme was formally established in 1996.
The Artists and Writers to Antarctica Programme aims to encourage artists in all disciplines to explore Antarctica in their work and thus increase understanding among New Zealanders of the value of Antarctica and its global importance. Antarctica New Zealand aims to cater, over time, for a wide variety of artistic styles and audiences reflecting the diversity of Antarctica and of New Zealand society.
The Artists and Wrters to Antarctica Programme aims to fulfil four separate yet symbiotic aims:
The selected artists are known as Antarctic Arts Fellows
Who is eligible?
The Programme is open to applications from serious scholars of the humanities including writers, illustrators, musicians, photographers, sculptors, choreographers and anyone who belives thier art fits the criteria. Successful applicants will travel to Antarctica for up to two weeks and will visits sites appropriate to their artistic discipline.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.

Applications for the Artists and Wrters to Antarctica Programme close with Antarctica New Zealand on the 1st March each year.
