ARTSPACE is pleased to announce Vera Mey as the recipient of the 2010 Inaugural Education & Media Internship, a unique pilot scheme which focuses on building Asian audiences in Auckland.

Vera Mey starts her internship in April and says “I am extremely honoured and excited to be offered this internship. I see ARTSPACE as forming a kind of critical hub for the local contemporary art scene, as well as an important point of engagement with the international art world. I intend to make ARTSPACE’s programmes relevant and exciting to a diverse audience.”

Vera Mey comes to us with a solid background in the arts and working with communities. She is currently completing an M.A in Museum and Heritage Studies. She gained pivotal experience in every aspect of exhibition management through curating an exhibition called Orientate: re-imagining customary forms at Pataka Museum. She has also worked with communities at ROAR, New Zealand’s first gallery to promote outsider art. She is of Indonesian and Cambodian heritage.

ARTSPACE Director Emma Bugden says “Vera arrives at an opportune moment to extend recent initiatives which were developed to engage Asian audiences with our exhibitions.

ARTSPACE internships give young people the chance to add depth to their knowledge and experience. We aim to give them a firm grounding so they are in a position to take on senior roles in New Zealand’s creative industries
within five years.”

The ARTSPACE Education and Media Internship is made possible through the support of Creative New Zealand and ASB Community Trust.
