Shameless Plug is a new-ish series where we turn things over to creatives. In exchange for plugging their project, they have to spill their guilty pleasure, biggest inspiration, personal motto and a few other secrets. If you would like to be part of the series, email editor@thebigidea.co.nz

Rosetta is an upcoming pop artist from Ōtautahi Christchurch. She makes super girly, upbeat pop music that feels like it stepped straight out of the 2000s – sparkly, sugary-sweet, and full of nostalgia. She's here to plug a new music video that's exactly that for her song Miss Passion.

Here's the popstar on her loves and motivations:

My guilty pleasure is vintage shopping. I am obsessed. I spend way too much time and money hunting down the perfect Y2K pieces on Depop, op shops, and eBay. My closet is absolutely overflowing! But honestly, it's so worth it. There is nothing like finding a perfect little gem from the 2000s that feels like it was made for you.

The most fun I’ve ever had on a project was my most recent song, Miss Passion. I co-wrote it with Emerson and Dan Martin, and it was such a fun session! I really felt like we captured exactly the vibe I wanted. I also got to create my first ever music video with the help of NZ On Air, which was an insane experience. Every time I write a song, I instantly start imagining the music video, and seeing that vision go from my brain to real life was surreal. Working with Ben Dykes, who absolutely nailed the aesthetic, made it even more special.

My biggest career hack for creatives is to stop avoiding things that might feel embarrassing and start owning them with confidence. As a small artist, you’re constantly in situations that could be awkward or cringe to other people, but if you let that stop you, you’ll never grow. I always remind myself that the “embarrassing” thing I’m scared to do might be the exact thing that changes my career. Confidence is the biggest cheat code.

I knew from a really young age that I wanted to be an artist. I was completely obsessed with Hannah Montana and High School Musical. HSM was actually probably my first introduction to songwriting. It inspired me to write my first song when I was around seven. I used to be a competitive swimmer, and whenever the coach made us write down our future goals, everyone else wrote “Olympics.” Meanwhile, I wrote “popstar.” I think that says it all!

I feel most creative when I’m sitting in my little pink bedroom, surrounded by all the cute things I’ve decorated it with. It’s my safe space and the one place where my thoughts flow, and ideas just appear out of nowhere. That room is basically where all my songs are born.

I keep myself accountable by reminding myself that I am the only one standing between my dreams and my reality. Being an artist means you don’t have anyone telling you what to do. No boss, no schedule, no rules. That can be dangerous if you’re not careful. I remind myself that if I don’t do the work, I won’t get where I want to be. That thought keeps me motivated more than anything.

My favourite album of all time would have to be Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. It’s so fun, so girly, so nostalgic, just truly iconic. The songs, the visuals, the music videos… everything about that era was perfection. It’s been a huge inspiration for how I write music, and it’s honestly my favourite era of pop ever.

My favourite TV show ever would have to be the one I always go back to, Pretty Little Liars. It’s nostalgic, dramatic, chaotic, and I was absolutely obsessed with it growing up. We desperately need more girly, dramatic, mystery-filled teen shows like that again!

One embarrassing thing I seem to do at every show is wear dangerously huge platform heels on stage and there are wires everywhere, so I usually almost wipe out at least once. You’d think I would have learned my lesson, but honestly it’s become part of the performance at this point. I feel like being an artist in general is embarrassing because you’re always putting yourself out there, but you just have to own it.

My shameless plug is my first ever music video for my new song Miss Passion, and I would love for you to check it out! It’s super fun, super girly, and I’m so, so proud of how it turned out.
