The students on Beyond The Camera Beginners participate in an intense hands-on proactive day.  Through the process of making television shows – including a live-to-audience show at the end of the day, the students utilize all the Ministry of Education key competencies.

Relating to others in a highly focussed co-operative environment. - working as a team, all focussed on their crew roles they affirm the relationship of the team to create a show. All students actively encourage show performers.

Thinking about the role they are in, and how they can best utilise the learned skills in a creative and productive way. Students work by co-operative planning, working out crew roles, scripting items, camera positions, problem solving, maintaining focus through-out rehearsals and shows…

Using language, symbols, texts by communicating with the team through the use of clear verbal dialogue as well as a variety of silent exchanges. They use correct industry language and etiquette, direct to the group, and through comms system. They quickly learn to understand television jargon, instructions, and follow the format of television production. As a team the students construct a script in television format. It is expected practice for all to use encouraging language and affirmations.

Self motivation to meet their own high standards of achievement, all students work at own roles, in a disciplined way, knowing they are an integral part of the team.  Some lead others, some work at role independently, all follow instructions, being engaged as individuals for the team outcome. Students use a complex and hazardous environment responsibly.

Participating and contributing as a respected member of a professional television crew, all students have an important role working to one goal -  eg director, VT op, cameras, sound, lights, floor manager, vision, performer, interviewer, presenter... The students gain confidence, rendering a sense of self worth. The team participate with their wider family community (live audience) to present learned skills.

Beyond The Camera Beginners is a one-day opportunity for students aged 10-13.

Beyond The Camera Beginners is an introductory 1 day course aimed at young people who love to act, sing, dance, play an instrument.  It is aimed at young people who want to learn how to operate a real television studio. The students on the course will both perform in front of the camera and drive the studio and all the elements beyond the camera.

We have previously trialled some enormously successful beginners’ courses, and now we open the course to all of  New Zealand.

These exciting one-day courses act as an introduction to Beyond The Camera – the six-day TV and film experience for which has been operating since 1995.  It has become very well known throughout New Zealand as a stepping stone for teenagers into the television and film industry and tertiary courses.

Now its time for our younger children to prove their capabilities!

Please give the brochures to any children aged 10-13 that you think would benefit from this thrilling day, when they will produce their own live TV show in the only professional studio in a New Zealand school.
