Build your own media kit

You never know when the media might come knocking at your door. So make like a boy scout [or a girl guide] and be prepared with a basic media kit.

You never know when the media might come knocking at your door and there's nothing worse than having to drop everything and create some basic media material. So make like a boy scout [or a girl guide] and be prepared.

Your media kit should have:

  • A backgrounder about your organisation, your event or yourself [depending on whose media kit this is]

What is a backgrounder? A backgrounder is an information sheet that you should send out to all media sources along with your news releases, press conference invitations, feature stories and other approaches.

  • A logo - think about where this might be used [many online spaces crop images square so bear that in mind].
  • Some photos - headshots of people in your organisation, event or project. This should be hi-res for print and also web sized images. Again, think of how they might look cropped.
  • Bios of the people involved in your organisation, event or project. These should not be cvs, which are likely to be ignored by media and this is not a job application.
  • Also prepare moving image and sound files [especially for online, TV and radio].

Consider how you might share this information with the media - in dedicated section on your site, via dropbox or through email.

Do all this and keep it up to date - then you'll truly be prepared.
