2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, paving the way for the reunification of Germany. To celebrate this momentous event, the four-film series, East Germany: Behind the Wall screens at Film Societies around the country in June and July, in association with the Goethe-Institut, Wellington.

First up is ‘The Architects’, set in East Berlin as the Wall crumbles. A team of architects set out to goad the Communist powers that be, to see how much they can get away with.

“The story behind the making of this tragedy is integral to understanding the picture itself. Shooting started in September 1989 as multitudes took to the streets throughout East Germany. By the time the film was finished, East Germany no longer existed.” – Variety

Diana Kluge from the Goethe Institut will be present at the screening of ‘The Architects’ at the Academy Cinema, Auckland on Monday 8 June to introduce the film and for Q&A afterwards.

Also screening are the classic teen cult film, ‘Berlin Schönhauser Corner’; ‘I Was Nineteen’, a wartime story based on the director’s own experience; and ‘Her Third’, the story of a woman’s journey to independence, which reveals East German cinema’s forward thinking on feminist issues.

Film Society memberships are on sale at the venue before all Film Society screenings. Entry by donation is also available to the public, courtesy of the Goethe-Institut, Wellington.
