The National Party has won the New Zealand general election, ending nine years of Labour Party reign under Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Helen Clark called Mr Key at 11pm on Saturday November 8 to concede defeat. Helen Clark has also announced she is stepping down as the leader of the Labour party.

    Helen Clark called Mr Key at 11pm on Saturday November 8 to concede defeat. Helen Clark has also announced she is stepping down as the leader of the Labour party.

    The results give National 59 seats and ACT 5. United Future leader Peter Dunne adds one seat.

    Labour has 43 seats, the Greens eight, Progressive Party 1.

    The Maori Party holds five of the seven Maori seats.

    New Zealand First did not reach the 5 percent it needed to hold seats in Parliament, and Winston Peters has not won the Tauranga seat, losing his place in Parliament.
