Fashion students Debut

04 Jun 2009
CPIT's third-year fashion students will showcase their first fashion collections at Debut this mo

The first designer collections created by CPIT’s third-year fashion students will be showcased at Debut later this month.

Debut, CPIT’s first fashion show for 2009, gives students studying in their last year of CPIT’s Diploma in Fashion Technology & Design the opportunity to profile their creations to the public.

The students have all completed work experience with one of New Zealand’s top designers such as Juliette Hogan, Federation, Trelise Cooper and Robyn Cliff.  Each designer gave their students a brief to create a collection, and it is these designs that will be on display.

Students will each show up to eight models dressed in creations designed and manufactured by them as part of their assessment. Hair, makeup, choreography and music is also organised by each student to further illustrate the theme and inspiration behind their collection.

Niki Chrisp, CPIT’s fashion programme leader, says linking the production of a collection to an industry client helps students gain valuable industry perspective.

“The reality of developing a clothing collection can only be experienced in an industry setting,” says Niki.

“The work experience and subsequent collections produced by students gives them a greater appreciation of all aspects of the business and the kind of impact time constraints can have on the development and decision making processes.”

Niki says Debut marks a big step forward for students as it is the first chance they have to apply all of their skills in a single collection.

“Debut is an exciting challenge for students.  They have to design, pattern-make and construct all the garments, as well as designing the presentation components which includes choosing models, designing hair and makeup, managing the personnel involved and choreographing/coaching the models on the runway.”

Debut is the pre-event to CPIT’s end-of-year fashion show, PITCH, where the students will launch designs inspired totally by their own sense of style direction gained from their study and workplace experience.
