Twenty three UCOL Hairdressing students presented styles from the Edwardian to the Rock n Roll era and from Africa to Japan in their annual pre-apprentice competition this week.
As part of their programme, the Certificate in Hairdressing students were required to research a culture or era of their choice and depict it in a hair style.
The students had one hour to recreate the style they had practiced dozens of times on their mannequins.
Eleven students from the UCOL Wairarapa campus joined twelve Palmerston North students to compete for prizes for Most Professional Approach, Best Overall History project and the Best Style on the Day.
The styles and research portfolios were judged by Whanganui UCOL’s Senior Lecturer in Hairdressing Karen Snape and Whanganui UCOL Hairdressing student Hera Condon-Orr.
UCOL Hairdressing Lecturer Gillian Gosper says the competition is the culmination of months of research and practice by the students. She was particularly impressed by the standard of the work this year.
The competition was held in UCOL’s Learning Hub amidst the busy lunchtime buzz.
“Many of the students were nervous about performing in public,” says Gillian. “But that is effectively what hairdressers do every day in their working lives.”
Style on the Day: Adriana Timms (1st), Kayla Broughton (2nd), Rawiri Maurirere (3rd).
Most Professional Approach – Palmerston North: Kirsty-Lee Scott.
Most Professional Approach – Wairarapa: Paula Pasi.
