Karangahape Road historian Edward Bennett has taken nearly 500 people on free guided walks of the famous road in the last 6 months. The tour starts at Symonds St Cemetery with entertaining anecdotes about last century's eccentric and noteworthy and often notorious characters.

Another of Mr Bennett's interests, architectural history, enriches the tour with both his extensive knowledge of architectural styles and the use of the buildings. "Not many people know that New Zealand's Government House used to stand on the site of St Kevin's Arcade between 1848 and 1851 or that a windmill (on the site of now, the Langham Hotel) was the trigger for the formation of the NZ Historic Places Trust."
