The cold weather has arrived in Christchurch, but the sixth Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights from 18 to 27 June is sure to put some sparkle and some warmth into winter.

The 2010 programme opens with an exotic harem-themed party and then for 10 days showcases local talent in fashion, music, food & wine, community events, performing arts, heritage and art.

Up-cycle unwanted clothes at Swap-O-Rama-Rama, see The Butler before it tours to London, swot up on Lyttelton’s heritage, sip wine by the fire with a connoisseur, cook a mid-winter feast, join a ukulele jam or improvise on a theme in the Basement – there is something for everyone and almost 30 events to choose from.

The biggest drawcard as always will be the famous Street Party on Friday 25 June. The combination of a masked parade, live bands, the dazzling Lyttelton Port of Christchurch Fireworks, and this year a Science Alive planetarium, is guaranteed to bring local families out in their winter woolies to enjoy the unique atmosphere of London Street.

“The Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights has turned six and continues to grow. The programme this year is our most exciting yet and the support from the community and local businesses has been amazing,” Project Lyttelton event organizer Wendy Everyingham said.

“Our Festival of Lights has matured into a ‘must see’ Christchurch event and one that shows Lyttelton lit up at its mid winter best.”

In line with Project Lyttelton’s sustainability and community-building focus, festival-goers will be encouraged to use public transport and to support the festival’s Zero Waste approach by taking any non-recyclable rubbish home.

The 2010 Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights is sponsored by Christchurch City Council, AMG, Lyttelton Port of Christchurch, Hang Up Entertainment, Lyttelton Engineering, The Canterbury Community Trust, Lion Foundation, The Press, The Southern Trust and Volcano Radio.

The Lyttelton Harbour Festival of Lights runs from 18 – 27 June with the popular Street Party on 25 June. See www.lyttelton.net.nz for programme details or call Project Lyttelton on 328 9243 or email office@lyttelton.net.nz
