Pioneer of Video Art - Nam June Paik, 73, Dies

Korean artist Nam June Paik was famous as the ultimate early adopter of new screen technologies. His beautiful and often comic subversions of the medium formed a commentary on the mainstream tendency towards visual cliches and blandness. His relationship to technology was both intricate and irreverent. His studio was once described as resembling a TV repair shop with a big backlog of orders. His New York Times obituary states that, "He presciently coined the term 'electronic superhighway' in 1974, grasping the essence of global communications and seeing the possibilities of technologies that were barely born." In that sense he is considered a forerunner and significant not only to experimental video artists but to new media and digital art/technology communities worldwide.
