A new contemporary art gallery is soon to be opened on High St, Motueka. The gallery, called Obscure Gallery, will be having its opening night on Saturday 24th October at 5.30 - 7.30 pm to launch its presence in the Nelson/Tasman region. Dedicated to fringe culture, Obscure Gallery will be defined by difference and it's desire to engage on the peripheries of artistic vision.

Owner and contemporary mixed media artist John Currin will be showcasing his own works as well as other contemporary and international artists. John has exhibited both here and in London/Brighton, UK. On the opening night he will be exhibiting alongside, most notably, UK designer and jeweller Lizzy D and James Wallace finalist Garry Currin.

Opening night will see painting, mixed media and jewellery on display. The works displayed will showcase some exciting new ventures for the artists concerned and herald new pathways of their creative exploration. The photographic impasses between reality and dream as painted by Garry Currin, the burlesque jewellery of Lizzy D to be worn by the risqué. John Currin's surreal worlds fast approaching the apocalyptic, now populated by the lost or the macabre.

Obscure Gallery will undoubtedly be offering a different visual experience from the standard gallery experience in the region. The vision of the gallery is dedicated to imagination and the execution of things unseen. Its artists are here to present these things with skill, so as to bring into plain sight that which is often overlooked. The motto of the gallery is "the eye altering alters all."
