Andrew Barrie, a New Zealand-born architectural educator and designer formerly based in Tokyo, has been appointed Professor of Design at The University of Auckland’s School of Architecture and Planning.
After completing doctoral studies in Japan, Andrew Barrie spent several years working in the office of Toyo Ito, one of Japan's most innovative and influential architects. He writes on Japanese architecture for international architecture magazines and has published two books on the subject. Andrew's own design work has won numerous awards in both New Zealand and Japan and has been exhibited in both countries.
“I'm very excited to join the School of Architecture and Planning at the National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries. In addition to my research and teaching at undergraduate and graduate level, I will be working in the community to promote ways in which great architecture can enrich and improve all our lives. Japan's contemporary architecture vividly reflects evolving social and economic conditions, so it's very easy to understand how changes in the way we think and live relate to new developments in architecture,” says Professor Barrie.
“NICAI is delighted to welcome Andrew Barrie to the School of Architecture and Planning. His international reputation and experience as a leading-edge designer will bring a new perspective and level of skill to our already strong suite of teaching and research-based programmes,” says Professor Jenny Dixon, Dean of NICAI.
In September, Professor Barrie will also teach a Continuing Education course, Design Superpower: The Contemporary Architecture of Japan. The course will review Japan's unique architectural traditions and will trace the development of Japanese architecture through the 20th century, focusing on the rapid architectural developments that paralleled the nation's extraordinary rise from the ashes of WWII to economic superpower.
