Tired of sweating in the crowds at the World Expo? Come along to am art space and cool off on your own slice of paradise. Between 7-20 July, the gallery will be transformed into an urban jungle room. Bring your lunch or a book, take your shoes off, walk slowly or lie down to enjoy this unusual new exhibition by New Zealand artist, Kerry Ann Lee.
Inspired by science-fiction and past Expo pavilions, Lee’s new site-specific artwork, AM Park, explores the ‘future city’ aspirations of Shanghai in 2010 and features surreal images of monumental structures with a real grass lawn grown in the main gallery of am art space.
Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, Kerry Ann Lee’s art operates in the space between private moments and public locations. With a background in graphic arts, culture clashing and punk rock, Lee creates work using paper and found materials that is both expressive and socially engaged. As an artist-in-residence at island6 Art Centre Shanghai last year, she was moved by the transforming city under the shadow of the World Expo. Lee’s new work at am art space will playfully engage gallery-goers with some of the more humanistic concerns of an urban utopia in Shanghai.
“Shanghai in 2010 captures the imagination as a place of rapid and sensational change,” says Lee. “What I understand of space, place and permanence is constantly challenged here as the city transforms at breakneck speeds, each new change sparks a new dream. The park is a symbol of western colonial development. In New Zealand, green grass is abundant and very common but has a different value in contemporary urban cities like Shanghai where it plays a support role to man-made structures. By ‘bringing the outside inside’, I am looking to create a temporary green zone for people to relax, reflect and enjoy.”
Catch it while you can: AM PARK by Kerry Ann Lee opens at 6pm on Tuesday 6 July and runs until 20 July at am art space, 6 Xiangshan Road, Shanghai, China, 200020.
The gallery will also be hosting a floor talk and a lawn cutting party at 7pm, Friday 16 July.
