Tauranga-based singer-songwriter Luke Thompson says he can be inspired anywhere, at anytime and can also be very uninspired in some of his favorite places.
"It's something I've stopped trying to figure out, and just started listening and waiting for."
Luke says sitting around coming up with ideas is the most exciting part of what he does. And winter seems to play a big part in his inspiration.

The 24-year-old recently released his debut album Here on the Ground comprised of a dozen original, personal and musically diverse songs.During what hours of the day do you feel most inspired?
Mid-morning and midnight.
How would a good friend describe your aesthetic or style?
I asked a good friend this question and he said, "A travelling minstrel/hobo who needs haircut." I occasionally sleep on his couch and eat his bagels.
What aspect of your creative practice gives you the biggest thrill?
Writing. Just sitting around coming up with ideas. By far, the most exciting part of what I do.
How does your environment affect your work?
I imagine it has a huge subconscious effect on everybody's work. However, I don't try to control my environment in that way. I find I can often be inspired anywhere, at anytime, but I can also be very uninspired in some of my favourite places. It's something I've stopped trying to figure out, and just started listening and waiting for.
Do you like to look at the big picture or focus on the details?
Both. The big picture is often my motivation to get down to the tiniest of details.
What's your number one business tip for surviving (and thriving) in the creative industries?
Trust yourself, and your first impressions. And don't think too much.
Which of your projects to date has given you the most satisfaction?
My album Here On The Ground.
Who or what has inspired you recently?
Winter. The seasons seem to play a big part in my inspiration.
If you could go back and choose a completely different career path to the one you've chosen, what would it be?
Maybe a builder?
What place is always with you, wherever you go?
Some place I've never been.
What's the best way to listen to music, and why?
As it's being performed ... or even created ... that's where all the magic is.
You are given a piece of string, a stick and some fabric. What do you make?
A bow and arrow, and a Robin Hood cape.
What's the best stress relief advice you've ever been given?
Get some sleep.
What's great about today?
It's cold and I don't have anywhere to be. So I'll get all wrapped up and walk around aimlessly.
What's great about NZ Music Month?
It's always NZ Music Month for me, but people seem to take more notice of NZ-made music in May, so that's cool.
What's your big idea for 2008?
Write a children's story.
