We know the arts and creative community in New Zealand is full of giving and support for one another. Pro bono time, mates rates and good old fashioned favours keep our industry ticking over. As a facilitator of community, we're pondering whether we could help coordinate and recognise the value of all this generosity by starting an online timebank.
Timebanking involves a kind of credit or money. One hour of service to another person is equivalent to one time credit. When you have a network or circle of members willing to engage with each other in work via exchange of credit, you have a ‘timebank’.
Edgar Cahn, the founder of modern timebanking, sets out a challenge that successful timebanks adopt five core values:
