Raising the Bar- The 2011 Volunteering Conference is being hosted by Volunteering NZ in Wellington 23-24 May. Raising the Bar will celebrate a significant year for volunteering worldwide. 2011 is the 10th Anniversary of the UN International Year of the Volunteer. New Zealand will join the rest of the world in marking the year as a time of reflection on what has been achieved in the decade since 2001.
2011 will see the single largest New Zealand event volunteer programme take place within the Rugby World Cup festival in September and October. With this in mind episodic and event volunteering will be one of the two major streams for Conference 2011. A keynote speaker will be David Bretell, who was significantly involved in one of the most successful event volunteer programmes ever - that of the Sydney Olympics.
An important new initiative to progress the development of the management of volunteering and the profession as a whole came from the 2009 conference. In 2011 the conference will offer the opportunity to review progress and consider the next steps.
Two other keynote speakers are Susan Ellis, internationally recognised as a commentator and educator in all aspects of volunteering, and Marcus Akuhata-Brown, Ngati Porou, who is a truly inspirational speaker.
There will be three main themes in the programme, each aiming to Raise the Bar.
Early bird registration ($375 GST incl) is open until 26 March. To register and find all the details on the conference, visit www.volunteeringnz.org.nz
