John Ralston Saul, the internationally-renowned philosopher, novelist and author writes in his latest book, The Collapse of Globalism: And the Reinvention of the World, that through the 80s and 90s New Zealand took part in a failed globalist neo-liberal experiment. He also argues that globalisation, with its promises of abolishing poverty through international trade and the creation of a global democracy, is dead.

Sometimes controversial, always thought-provoking, an evening with John Ralston Saul - also author of Voltaire's Bastards and The Doubter's Companion - should not be missed.

The New Zealand Book Council and Penguin Books (NZ) are proud to be hosting Join John Ralston Saul and Finlay Macdonald for an insightful discussion of an economic theory that has reshaped the global economic and social landscapes of the last thirty years. This one-off event will be held at The Hyatt Regency Hotel on Thursday 18 August, from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.

John Ralston Saul's impact on political and economic thought was firmly established with his 1995 Massey Lectures. The resulting book, The Unconscious Civilization, won the 1996 Governor General's Literary Award for Non-Fiction (Canada). He has also published five novels, one of which, The Paradise Eater, won the prestigious Italian Premio Letterario Internazionale. His books have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

An advocate for freedom of speech, John Ralston Saul served as secretary, vice-president and president of the Canadian Centre of International PEN between 1987 and 1992. He is now its Patron.
