After a long and exciting process, Mind and Body Consultants’ Like Minds, Like Mine team is ready to announce the winners of the third annual RETHiNK Grant and the next round of projects that will challenge our community’s attitudes about mental illness.
This year’s RETHiNK applications covered a diverse range of innovative and creative projects from artists, musicians, poets, web developers, actors and businesses. From 37 applications, the team was able to fund just three projects, with an available total pool of $15 000. 17 experts representing mental health, cultural, creative and media fields were directly involved in the decision process. Judges were looking for “clear and concise idea's which were sustainable and would could create ongoing programmes or resources,” (Doug Poole, poet and judge). Like Minds, Like Mine at Mind and Body Consultants are proud to announce our support of the following projects;
David Deveraux-Kelly for In Your Own Words
Fresh with a New Zealand first David does post-production for a new cutting-edge technology that has not yet been used on our shores! The 3M digital screens he uses are only a few millimetres thick and can be cut into any shape for a completely interactive viewing experience. David will be collaborating with others to produce talking, video installations that challenge public pedestrians to shift their attitudes and take part in social change. Think “Star-Trek Holograms” meets “Banksy-Graffiti art”. Visit http://tiny.cc/screen_demo to view a sample of what these screens can do.
Christian Jensen for RETHiNK Possible Worlds
Christian Jensen is creative director for Auckland’s leading performance poetry troupe, The Literatti. In association with Etched Dance Productions, Renegade House, the Moving Image Centre and other professional collaborators RETHiNK Possible Worlds presents a multimedia show bringing poetry, dance, music, visual art, comedy, theatre and film together to explore the journey out of unwellness. A Youtube competition precedes the show and asks young Aucklanders to produce their own Youtube clip that explores the theme ‘We Are All Human Beings Navigating the Maze of Life.’ The best clips will be chosen for a preshow at the RETHiNK Possible Worlds events. Five members of The Literatti, each with their own experience of unwellness, are about to be given one month to write the show before an intensive period of workshopping with their many collaborators. More information at www.theliteratti.com.
Jim Marbrook for Mental Notes
Mental Notes is a powerful documentary from an award-winning filmmaker that explores the experiences of several people who survived institutionalisation in New Zealand and have gone on to live well in their communities. The judges were impressed by how far the project has already come and wanted to provide some support to keep the project moving towards its final destination by either producing a run of DVDs or funding the venue hire for an Auckland screening at Academy Theatre.
