Sculpture on the Gulf - last day this Sunday 13th February 2005.Artists work away often alone and unseen with little return, monetary or otherwise. During the installation and opening week on Waiheke the artists were treated royally. Spoken to with respect and affection, helped in our tasks cheerfully, there was never a moment where we were lacking in support. At the beginning of the opening, during the Blessing Ceremony, for the first time I can remember the Artists were thanked first for an exhibition and called forward to be seen by the crowd. It was a rare and beautiful experience.
Sculpture on the Gulf is a non profit event that has been established by a small group of private individuals who want to promote local sculpture. There does seem to be a sea change towards the arts in this country and it is because people like these few Waihekeians are putting their pocketbooks where passion is.
It is a great joy to applaud the foresight and skill with which New Zealand's premier sculptural event has been handled!
