The Screen Directors Guild of New Zealand welcomes the review of the New Zealand Film Commission by Sir Peter Jackson and David Court.

SDGNZ believes the recommendations are very good for creative practitioners. In our view, with Graeme Mason and Patsy Reddy’s recent appointments, we have noticed an openness to working more closely with the industry. The process of conducting the review has been positive and has led to a more open dialogue between the New Zealand Film Commission and creative practitioners.

“As an organization which represents directors and editors we are particularly happy to note the central role which the review says must be placed on directors and storytellers in the industry,” says President Peter Bell.

SDGNZ sees there are exciting ideas around commissioning and development.  The review talks about setting up a development committee with four to five development commissioners who would work closely with the creatives on eight to ten projects each.  Directors Guild members would welcome any development model which can maintain the momentum and energy which initially gave rise to the idea for a film.

It is forward thinking that the review looks not only at the Film Commission but also at building a stronger and larger sustainable local film industry based firmly in New Zealand.  The review states that one of the greater aims of the Film Commission should be to “Assist the successful film makers to develop their next NZ movie – and encourage them to stay based in this country.” The review demonstrates that a strong local industry would be beneficial for growing the economy with successful Kiwi based film makers attracting big budget finance from off shore.
