Sector Workshop: Whangarei as a famous arts and cultural destination?

15 Apr 2010
The Arts Promotion Trust has been working with ten organisations and the WDC to explore the idea

The Arts Promotion Trust has been working with ten organisations in your sector (list attached) and the WDC to explore the idea of a Culture, Heritage and Arts Resource Trust for the Whangarei District. Through a research process which included questionnaires, workshops and a report the sector have developed a vision –of Whangarei as an Arts Culture and Heritage destination.

Imagine a vibrant city with sculpture and murals, live music and dance, a Maori Arts and Cultural centre and a consistent, fantastic array of exhibitions, shows and performances which entertain, educate and inspire local residents and visitors from near and far.

We are now working on a “mapping”  process to ensure that we know a little bit about who you all are, what you are up to, what you need and how you will fit into this future. We are gathering this information to ensure that we:

  •   understand the sector and how it works
  •   can plan for the future with you in mind

Funders ( both large and small ) have told us that they prefer to work with sector groups and to have an understanding of the whole picture for any community before assigning funding as otherwise they receive applications from different groups who seem to them to be trying to achieve the same thing. Government departments are saying the same thing: if money is to be delivered into districts for arts and heritage developments they want to have confidence that we (the sector) are working together and that we agree about what the priorities for our community are.

We won’t agree about everything! But during the research we discovered that we agree about a lot.

A copy of the CHART report is available for you, at your request, either electronically or in printed form. Please make sure we have your contact details so that we can keep in touch, involve you in the process as it unfolds, and thank you for your help

We are holding a sector workshop day on Tuesday the 4th of May. This workshop will run from 10.00am til 4.30pm and you are invited. Please RSVP to let us know that you are coming. (The venue will be selected and advised when we have attendee numbers: there are over 600 organisations in our sector so we may need a big space!)
