The suburb of Newtown has long nurtured musical endeavours within its drafty villas and community halls. Now a local group of musicians are giving something back to the area that has so consistently embraced musicality of all genres.

The suburb of Newtown has long nurtured musical endeavours within its drafty villas and community halls. Now a local group of musicians are giving something back to the area that has so consistently embraced musicality of all genres.

The Phoenix Foundation, Little Bushman, Rio Hunuki-Hemepo, Good Laika and The Mantarays are amongst the bands contributing their musical stylings to Sounds Like Newtown.

Contributions from The Phoenix Foundation and Hikoikoi are previously unreleased tracks.

The kaupapa of this CD is giving back to the community100%. In this instance no one will take a cut – artists contribute 100%, local business are sponsoring the printing and publishing, and 100% of CD sale price goes to Newtown School and The Newtown Festival.

Organisers anticipate that $6000 will be raised for these highly deserving organisations.

Sam Lindsay, of The Eggs, speaks fondly of the South Wellington suburb, where fellow band members Dan and Chris Yeabsley cut their musical teeth. Their old flat on Adelaide Road "was pretty much where the Eggs were hatched".

The Phoenix Foundation and local psych-rockers The Pyramid Scheme are also familiar faces around Newtown, thanks to the musical hub that is 'Dr' Lee Prebbles Surgery on Tasman St. Many of these bands have used the Newtown Festival as a launching pad for greater success, and are grateful for the opportunity.

Sounds Like Newtown is a rocking ode to the diversity and passion of the Wellington music scene!
