There is no denying that Standstill certainly made an impression on Auckland theatregoers when it premiered last month at the Auckland Fringe Festival. Now, The Rebel Alliance is delighted to announce a one off encore show at TAPAC theatre on Saturday the 30th of April.

3 actors on 3 treadmills for 60min. It’s a simple as that in this latest production from The Rebel Alliance. Inspired by true stories and propelled by a fierce undercurrent of desperation, Standstill weaves tales of factory workers, cyclists, doctors and tour guides into a sweaty kaleidoscopic image of what happens when our dreams and ambitions collide with the lives we end up living.

“Writer, director and producer Anders Falstie-Jensen has woven an impressively-crafted, snappily-written whole out of snippets of modern life, and his wry vision of cyclists, doctors and Aussie tour guides is well-delivered by the three chameleon actors.” – NZ Herald

Productions by The Rebel Alliance tend to have a strong link to true stories and Standstill is no exception. Colin, the Cambridge Cannonball, a champion cyclist with father issues and Nazi worries, is loosely based on the Danish 1996 Tour de France winner, Bjarne Riis a.k.a ‘The Eagle From Herning’ (Herning is akin to Hastings) who went from national hero to villain when he in an interview was asked “Have you ever taken drugs?” and replied “I’ve never tested positive.”

Likewise the play’s weird encounter between a doctor and a male nurse who used to be a top hairdresser is a 90% accurate account of something that happened to Anders Falstie-Jensen’s brother. There’s no denying that truth often is weirder than fiction.

Standstill is The Rebel Alliance’s 6th premier of a new NZ work since the band of rebels gathered in 2006. They are currently in preproduction with their largest work to date, Yours Truly by Albert Belz, which is expected to have its Auckland premier later this year.
