Storytelling Without Words

24 Aug 2022
How we consume news and take in information has never been so visually driven. We take a look at some of the best images from the 2022 Voyager Media Awards.

Photography is unquestionably viewed as an art form. The ability to capture moments - staged or impromptu - has been applauded and marvelled at the world over.

But often overlooked are those who do so not for exhibitions but for media organisations.

A quick look at the finalists in the photography category at this year’s Voyager Media Awards underlines the artistry that goes into their work, often with short turnarounds and pressing deadlines.

The Features category was claimed by Stuff’s Chris Skelton for the sensitivity in which he shot his subjects, while colleague Ricky Wilson took out the news title for the sense of fun and levity he was able to bring to his shots.

Freelancer John Cowpland’s diverse portfolio of work for Stuff, Photosport and NZME saw him claim the sport photo crown ahead of fellow veteran Brett Phibbs (Phibbsvisuals, NZME, Photosport) - but Phibbs had the final say, named the Supreme Photographer of the Year after featuring as a finalist in several categories.

And storytelling is portrayed powerfully in the Photo-Story/Essay category, with Azita Agnew’s intimate and honest mahi for Re:News with The Young and the Reckless - a deep look into New Zealand’s ongoing homeless youth problem.

Mainstream media news coverage may not be everyone’s cup of tea - but there’s no questioning the artistry these ‘snappers’ can portray in their work.

Here are some of the standout images from this year’s finalists.
