Paint by Rules is a sudoku-inspired painting exhibition that playfully explores rules within art making. The interactive exhibition at Artstation from February 8 - 23 is a painting show with a difference - there's no paint and gallery visitors get to complete the works in the exhibition.

Paint by Rules is a sudoku-inspired painting exhibition that playfully explores rules within art making. The interactive exhibition at Artstation from February 8 - 23 is a painting show with a difference - there's no paint and gallery visitors get to complete the works in the exhibition.

Artist Juliet Monaghan interactive works, called Art doku, draw inspiration from the popular logic number game sudoku and explore ideas of pattern making, colour, abstraction, logic and mathematics. The numbers used in sudoku are translated into nine different coloured vinyl squares that can be moved around a magnetic canvas. Each day Juliet will create unfinished patterns which gallery visitors can complete individually or in groups, taking part in a constantly evolving exhibition.

The rules are simple: Each vertical and horizontal line of the painting must have at least one square of each different colour.

Some of the art works have a looser set of rules, which allow visitors a more expressive approach to art making.

While this exhibition invites visitors to create paintings based on rules there is always a chance people may rebel and make up their own rules!

Free Art doku Sessions
