Te Manawa O Tuhoe, - The Heart of Tuhoe. Hirini Melbourne writes: Terry O’Connor has captured what we feel, what we think and what makes us Tuhoe. He has seen into a corner of our hearts. Terry saw the vitality of Tuhoe reflected in the people and the marks the people left on the land…There is the history that is shrouded in the faces of the people and the shadow of the land. It is a history both ancient and living. There is also the indomitable spirit of the people and the land.
Somehow, within the images and their ranges of meaning, Terry has captured the voices and the feelings of Tuhoe poets and philosophers, both alive and dead. [2]
Terry was an Icon group member, along with Peter Black, Bruce Connew, Glenn Busch and Bruce Foster.
It became a group of individuals who encouraged each other in their different directions. Terry stepped his own path, as indeed did each of us, which had him peer in at the human condition from an angle of warmth and care, persuading imaginings, I always figured, of a tormented journey to this place of decency and righteousness.
