Old-time gangsters, earthquake victims, boring husbands, sadomasochistic wives, refugees, even chickens! That is just a sample of the characters that came out of the controlled creative mayhem that is - The 24hr Theatre Challenge. And … it is back at Titirangi Theatre this year with its unique format that encourages local actors, playwrights and directors to showcase their talents.

The Challenge

Five playwrights, five directors and 20 cast members, all randomly matched, will create a performance of intensity, originality, mild chaos and magic. And it all happens in just 24 hours!

After 2008’s rollicking success, this year, on Saturday 10th October 2009, the curtains will go up on the second 24-Hour Challenge.

Why 24 hours?

To ramp-up the intensity. The aim is to enable participants to experience the pressure-cooker of writing and producing a 10-15min play within just 24 hours. It is interesting to note that many of those who took part in this unique form of theatre last year, are already throwing their hat in the ring to give it another go.

Gluttons for punishment?

Maybe they are. There is no denying that the tight time limit calls for a level of improvisation, collaboration and resourcefulness that encourages creativity in every step of production. The 24hr Theatre Challenge is one instance where all in the team – having just met each other – are forced to work together to push the limits of imagination and stamina.

A platform for success?

It’s an excellent platform for aspiring scriptwriters, actors, and directors to showcase their talent in an exciting and dynamic format. This is an excellent avenue to show off and it’s an opportunity to bring the young and the seasoned closer together within a real sense of community,
