Arts consultant Tara Jahn-Werner explores Neil Ieremia and Moss Patterson’s careers and backgrounds; what motivates them as choreographers, and looks at the way their Samoan and Maori heritages respectively have been a key stimulus to their work.

Most importantly, the skills needed to be employed full time in the arts, and how they balance creativity with the business of making a living.

Black Grace founder Neil Ieremia is in the vanguard of New Zealand's most accomplished choreographers and, through his vision, imbues Black Grace with an explosive mix of rhythm, spirit and energy.  Forming the company in 1995 Neil has choreographed all of its major full-length works. In recognition of his considerable achievements, he received the 2005 Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award.

Ieremia’s characteristically energetic Verse 2, an exciting collection of his latest short works and excerpts for Black Grace is being staged at The Maidment Theatre on the evening of the Master Class, giving participants an opportunity to see his choreography in action.

Moss Patterson, Artistic Director, Atamira Dance Company began his performance career as a musician composing and performing in Dunedin. This led him to study acting at The New Zealand College of Performing Arts and then on to study dance and choreography at UNITEC Performing Arts School in Auckland.

For the past twelve years Moss has danced and choreographed for Atamira Dance Company, New Zealand’s leading Maori contemporary dance troupe. He and his colleagues create professional dance works inspired by Aotearoa’s history, legends and contemporary issues; drawing from their own personal stories and whakapapa.
