The Comedy Card Ninja

Javier Jarquin, winner of Best Local Show in Wellington at the 2010 NZ International Comedy Festival Awards, makes a return for one night only before heading for his new life in the UK.

The Legend of the Card Ninja takes us through Javier’s transformation from mild mannered IT consultant to award winning card throwing ninja. Card throwing, or scaling, is a skill deemed too difficult by most magicians. Yet through years of training with normal everyday playing cards, Javier’s mastery has entertained and impressed audiences at the Christchurch Arts Festival, the International Buskers Festival, and in a guest spot at the Melbourne Magic Festival.

However, this is not the only trick up his sleeve. An accomplished comedian and improvisor, Jav has worked as professional entertainer with the Court Theatre in Christchurch and is a core cast member of New Zealand’s longest running comedy show Scared Scriptless. He has appeared on TV3's @Seven and played some of the biggest comedy rooms in Australia and New Zealand. This performance promises to be something very different to your everyday magician.

“I created my Card Ninja act after seeing a lot of magicians doing similar acts to one another on stage, I wanted to do something different – skills rather than tricks” says Jav.

This combination of comedy and card throwing skill in the one show has made Legend of the Card Ninja a special and memorable performance. And as to his ninja credentials, he also holds a black belt in karate.

Javier will be joined at this unique performance by local host Jerome Chandrahasen and Class Comedians star high-school student Bea Joblin, in only her second ever comedy performance.

Combining Javier’s acclaimed stand up comedy and his dazzling Card Ninja act, this is one slick performance, soon to head to Edinburgh Fringe and most likely not to be seen on these shores again.

‘you will be impressed... Javier Jarquin’s Legend of the Card Ninja is a confident and slick combination of his impressive card tricks and his showman’s stand up.' – Theatreview
