A photographic work, The Correction, has won the top prize at the 2009 Wallace Art Awards.  The two photographs, by Marcus Williams and Susan Jowsey, won the Wallace Trust Paramount Award.

The Award includes a six month residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Programme in New York, plus a bronze trophy by Terry Stringer.

The 18th Wallace Art Awards, with prizes amounting to more than $150,000, were announced and presented on 7 September at the Aotea Centre in Auckland.

This year 456 applications were received; of these 115 were selected as finalists and 44 works have been chosen by the judges for the Travelling Show and the rest are exhibited in the Salon des Refuses at the Wallace Trust Gallery.

The 2009 Judges were - New Zealand artist Philip Trusttum,  Associate Professor at Auckland University of Technology Christopher Braddock, and Rohan Weallans, Paramount Winner of the 2006 Wallace Art Award.

The Exhibition of Winners and Selected Finalists

Auckland

Open to the public from 8 September - 2 October 2009 at the Aotea Centre, 8:30 – 4:30 weekdays and 10:00 – 4:00 weekends.

The works not chosen for the Exhibition of Winners and Selected Finalists are exhibited in the Salon des Refuses, 8 September - 2 October 2009, 10:00 – 4:00 Monday - Saturday at The James Wallace Arts Trust Gallery (305 Queen Street, Auckland).

Salons des Refuses have a very honourable history: The first was held in 1863 and arose because the official exhibition sponsored by the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris had been coming under huge criticism for rejecting new artists. The resulting complaints of bias led the Emperor Napoleon III to allow the rejected works to be displayed in a separate exhibition. In that first exhibition were several important paintings such as Manet’s “The Luncheon on the Grass”, James McNeil-Whistler’s “The White Girl”, and included works by Henri Fantin-Latour, Paul Cézanne, Armand Guillaumin, Johan Jongkind and Camille Pissarro.

Wellington

The Exhibition of Winners and Selected Finalists will travel to Wellington, and be open to the public 10:00 – 4:30 weekdays and 10:00 – 5:00 weekends from 17 October – 24 January 2010 at TheNewDowse (45 Laings Rd, Lower Hutt).
