More than 60 artistic banners, all painted by students, will appear from the Wellington Train Station to Cable Street to the end of Oriental Parade.
School art teachers and students were asked to create designs based on the theme of masks, suggested by Suzie Moncrieff, Creator/Director of WOW.
The Council, and main sponsor Pelorus Trust, provided each school with blank banners and a supply of test pots. Students eager to experience Wellington's first WOW season, have been working on their original art banners since July.
"Thanks to thousands of creative kids, our urban environment is going to get a lot more exciting and colourful," says Art Centre Project Manager Eric Holowacz, who developed Drive by Art as a way to connect creativity and community and build sense of place. "Bright faces, exotic masks, and unique designs will welcome everyone to the creative heart of New Zealand."
Gabrielle Hervey, CEO of WOW Ltd provided a resource kit for all participating teachers, and is delighted at the bold and dynamic outcome. "This student exhibition is another great way the city has supported the Montana WOW Awards Show - and most importantly utilises our event as the basis for developing creativity at all levels of the community," she says.
There will be a sign at eye-level underneath each banner detailing the name of the school and the banner. This exciting public exhibition will be on view throughout the spring and summer.
