Wintec has commissioned local Artist Zena Elliott to complete an artwork which is to be installed in the Gallagher Hub on the institute’s city campus. The 6 metre by 2.5 metre art work is scheduled to be completed within the next month and will be installed in the building’s large social space and computer commons facility. An unveiling event is planned.
Elliot graduated from the Wintec School of Media Arts with a Master of Arts, in 2006 Her work has recently been exhibited in group shows such as ‘The Inimitable Mr. Hopkins’, Barry Hopkins Art Collection, Waikato Museum of Art and History, (2008), ‘Got it Sussed’ (2008) at Whakatane Museum and Gallery and ‘Existence: Life According to Art’ 2007.
Elliott’s recent large scale paintings explores issues to do with cultural identity and popular culture and the relationships between media technologies such as; music videos, video gaming, comics and films and the impact these influences have on how identity may be constructed and localised.
The commissioned artwork will be influenced by Elliott’s past and recent work while also incorporating aspects of Hamilton’s’ youth culture and makes reference to the historic significance to Tainui of the land on which the campus sits. Elliott is of Ngati Awa, Te Whanau A Apanui descent.
