This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with technical experience to join the team at one of New Zealand’s leading professional theatres.  This is a contract position and will be offered initially for one year on a part-time basis.

The Technical Manager will primarily have responsibility for the technical operations and maintenance of both auditoria at Circa Theatre.  The Technical Manager will also act as a liaison for the Circa Council to ensure all cast and crew working in the building are familiar with the necessary safety procedures.  Finally, where appropriate, the Technical Manager will assist with other maintenance issues around the building.

The Technical Manager will exercise independent judgment in the performance of a wide variety of duties.  They should be familiar with health and safety legislation and regulations and the "Guide to Safe Working Practices in New Zealand Theatre and Entertainment Industry" (available at  www.etnz.org).

 Responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and safeguarding the technical assets of Circa One and Circa Two, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Monitoring the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment and arranging for its repair and replacement with budgetary constraints in mind.  Ideally the candidate will be able to perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Supervising the installation of new equipment and/or organising appropriate support for any large scale projects.
  • Scheduling any necessary annual checks and arranging crew to assist (eg lighting stock checks).
  • Maintaining an up-to-date inventory and researching and ordering specialized supplies when needed.
  • Orienting incoming co-ops, facility renters and/or visiting productions regarding health and safety requirements and procedures as well as familiarising them with any technical characteristics specific to Circa Theatre.
  • Advising on the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, for specific productions and/or events in advance of production dates.
  • Consulting on production budgets and advising designers on the technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for individual shows, and (when necessary) supervising the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Attending technical rehearsals, to supervise and assist in the technical aspects of mounting shows.
  • Making timely recommendations to the Circa Council regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.
  • Liaising with the Administrator on necessary building maintenance and, where appropriate, assisting with building maintenance issues.
