Background: Tauranga City Council and Creative Tauranga seek to commission an artist/s to transform the new pump station located at Memorial Park, Tauranga, into a work of public art. These are large, visible walls, it is a great opportunity for an artist/s to create a significant artwork for Tauranga Moana.

Vision: Public art developed as part of this project provides the opportunity to support and express Tauranga’s distinctiveness and identity, particularly in the Memorial Park area.

The artwork may reflect but is not limited to:

  • Stories of Tauranga and Memorial Park’s uniqueness in terms of history and cultural heritage. Note that Tauranga’s Anzac day celebrations take place at Memorial Park each year.
  • Themes of ‘play’ and ‘water’. Memorial park in the past had the only swimming pool in the city. The park is now a destination for families to enjoy, with the calm waterfront, a skatepark, playground, water fountain, train track, swimming pool and mini golf course.

Proposals will be assessed against Council’s Public Art design criteria:

  • Artistic excellence, innovation and quality
  • Environmental fit
  • Impact
  • Durability of the work and ongoing maintenance
  • Accessibility
  • Safety

Submissions close on the 26 August. Artwork to be completed by Christmas 2016.

Please fill in the application form, found on the Creative Tauranga website and return to jennifer@creativetauranga.org.nz
