The New Zealand Comedy Trust was established in 1995 to manage the NZ International Comedy Festival and foster the growth of comedy as a performing art and professional career in New Zealand.

A celebration of comedy, the annual NZ International Comedy Festival has grown into one of the most loved events of its type in the world. A major event on the nationwide calendar, it is held simultaneously over three weeks across Auckland and Wellington during May, with a total attendance of up to 90,000 each year.

As the Creative Producer, you will be part of a busy team responsible for the smooth running of the 2023 Comedy Festival. You will lead on the collaborative programming of the Festival and Trust events, ensuring a representative range of local, national and international quality live performance that challenges the spectrum of comedy – with the aim of presenting a Comedy Festival with a unique Aotearoa identity and world-class status.

A key part of the role is to produce a range of shows for the NZ Comedy Trust within the Festival, including the Best Foods Comedy Gala, our flagship event, alongside everything from large commercial shows, to intimate late night gigs, and kids’ shows. You will work closely with our broadcast partner to bring some of these live shows to audiences on TV and online. You will bring a creative approach to look at ways to showcase comedy and artists across live and digital environments.

Responsibilities include programming, budgeting, relationship management, industry development, ticketing, scheduling and logistics, reporting, and production administration.

You will also steer and deliver a range of artist and industry development initiatives, both within the Festival and throughout the year. Directly reporting to the General Manager, the role works collaboratively alongside the Operations Manager in general delivery of the Festival and Trust initiatives, and with the Marketing & Partnerships Manager to bring things to life.

To succeed in the role you will have:

  • Previous experience in arts or event management, including producing live shows.
  • Effective budgeting, scheduling and administration skills.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management and interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work to tight deadlines and to work effectively under pressure.
  • A collaborative approach with a high level of initiative, self-motivation and enthusiasm.
  • A passion for comedy and live performance.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Producer to join a small team in making a vital contribution to the comedy industry in Aotearoa.

The NZ Comedy Trust aims to elevate New Zealand comedy as a celebrated and integral feature of the arts sector. We create opportunities to develop, promote and grow a sustainable and representative comedy industry in Aotearoa. At all levels of programming and within our team, the New Zealand Comedy Trust champions the values of representation, contributing to a culture of inclusion and celebration.

This is a fixed term position running from August 2022 to August 2023, but we are open to looking at a permanent position for the right person.
