Nau mai, piki mai, haere mai! BATS Theatre, New Zealand’s leading developmental theatre, is part way through an exciting multi-year period of strategic development. We are seeking three board members to join the BATS Board of Directors.

The board plays an important role in shaping the development of the theatre and in upholding BATS’ position as a sector and community leader, and a vital part of the arts landscape in Aotearoa.

Who are we looking for?
We welcome applications from anyone with an understanding of the importance of live performance in our lives, and the availability to join a fun and active board.

We welcome applications from people from diverse communities and with diverse backgrounds, including young people who want to engage with BATS.

Previous governance experience is desirable but it is not required – what’s more important is that the BATS board encompasses a diverse range of skillsets, experience and perspectives. With that in mind, we would be very excited to welcome new board members who would bring one or more of the following:

  • Arts or performance practice

  • Marketing, Comms and Fundraising

  • Strategic people capabilities

Time commitment and benefits
Board meetings take place monthly from February to December, usually in the evenings at the theatre at 1 Kent Terrace, Wellington. Board members also attend occasional events like mihi whakatau, community events or strategy sessions. These are voluntary/unpaid roles. Board members have access to complimentary tickets to all BATS shows.

Application process
Please submit an initial expression of interest telling us about yourself and what you would bring to the board to board@bats.co.nz by 31 August 2022. Be sure to include a contact phone number. An expression of interest can take whatever form you like including a CV, video presentation or audio recording.

From a gorgeous repurposed historic building at 1 Kent Terrace in central Wellington, BATS theatre has nurtured creative talent and showcased exciting new New Zealand performance for over thirty years.

BATS is unique both locally and nationally in the way it partners with new work from emerging high school talent through to Arts Laureates.

This broad engagement drives adventurous programming and considered curation in an iterative process all year round. We hold safe spaces to strengthen art making through intergenerational collaboration on stage and behind the scenes. BATS is a hub for creativity where innovation, lifelong learning and thought leadership is supported by simply the chance to catch up over a cuppa.

We care for audiences and ensure accessibility with affordable pricing and digital reach.

BATS co-creates through trial and error. We use built-in feedback processes to improve initiatives as well as inspire new approaches. Our partnership matrix assists sector resilience. We collaborate with Wellington’s tertiary providers and other stakeholders to build better pathways for work and career development. Alongside like-minded venues and festivals we facilitate touring opportunities. We support projects to evolve in different spaces across the motu within fiscally achievable timeframes.

Generosity and kotahitanga are key to our approach. We share resources, thinking, learning and as a small organisation benefit from the support of others.

From 2022 this is appraised through the lens of an intercultural plan that seeks to dismantle power imbalances and build greater equity.

As an an arts leader BATS is funded by Creative New Zealand and the Wellington City Council.
