Exhibition Preparator

About Us

Our diverse communities make Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt a place of excitement and opportunity.  Come join us at Hutt City Council where, as connectors, creators and leaders, we are supporting our neighbourhoods to become the architects of their future.

About the role

The Preparator ensures that The Dowse and Petone Settlers Museum retain their reputation for beautiful, professionally delivered and maintained exhibitions and spaces, through their work.

You'll also oversee small scale building projects, including the design and fabrication of exhibition furniture and other gallery fixtures.  You must be proficient at packing, crating and transporting artworks and be prepared to travel domestically on occasion.

You will work closely with Artists, Curators, Registrar and Collections staff, to help the small but talented team at The Dowse realise the numerous and varied projects in our busy exhibitions schedule.

About You

We are looking for an experienced person, with strong technical and 2D and 3D design skills. You will have good communication skills, be a creative and analytical thinker with strong problem-solving attributes. Project and time management skills will be essential, along with a good level of workshop experience and physical fitness. A highly developed appreciation of visual arts would be a bonus.

You will hold a current driver licence, with the ability to drive manual vehicle or willingness to learn. Ideally you will also hold an EWP card, current HT licence or willingness to attain these.

The successful applicant will have a passion for art and museum objects, enjoy working in a creative team environment and enjoy the challenges of meeting exhibition deadlines. The Dowse team is close-knit, skilled and enthusiastic. Your work will be diverse, challenging and rewarding.

We recognise rewarding you is not only about your pay, so we've outlined some of the great benefits that may be available to you as an employee of Hutt City Council. Read more about them here at

Please note we may review applications before the closing date and encourage you to apply as soon as possible. We reserve the right to withdraw the job advertisement at any time.
