Summary

Nanogirl Labs brings together scientists, educators, communicators and storytellers to work on creating impactful educational resources. We are working as part of a national team to share some authentic kōrero about peoples’ experiences around the topic of menstruation and menstrual health. We are seeking an experienced illustrator to help us create short comics as part of this project. This project is expected to run from October 2022 - February 2023.

Purpose of the job

As part of the Ministry of Education’s initiative to place free menstrual products in schools, Nanogirl Labs is developing a series of comics to communicate information about menstruation to children between 8-12 years old.

We are looking to create a diverse range of New Zealand characters that will resonate with this age group and also bring in influences of Māori and Pacific cultures to highlight the traditional message that menstruation is empowering and something to be celebrated.

You’ll work with our writer and Senior Designer to help create this comic series for kids. You’ll take the writer’s script and instructions and enhance them with your creative interpretations–first creating a storyboard, then character designs, and finally, full-colour illustrations for comic book pages.

Given the nature of the subject material, we are looking for someone who is comfortable with open conversation around topics including menstrual and reproductive health.

This is a casual / contractor position. You will be contracted on a per-piece basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Experienced in creating illustrations for comic books, graphic novels, children’s books or panel-style comics which include written content.

  • Experienced in delivering high-quality illustration services related to book publication, particularly comics and/or graphic novel publishing.

  • Experienced in creating illustrations and character designs that are exciting, imaginative, friendly and accessible for 8-12 year olds and can speak to different ages of students (i.e. characters and visual design for an 8 year old versus for a 12 year old).

  • Able to manage the creation process from storyboarding with developed text content to delivering full-colour, finalised artworks.

  • An expert user of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or whichever programme you please for digitally drawn artwork–or with traditional art methods which can then be digitised.

  • Great understanding of color and mood. Able to create exciting, dynamic character designs and strong storytelling images.

  • Able to establish a consistent illustration style that is doable and efficient for the scope of the project. Able to complete high-quality illustrations and maintain continuity between comics.

  • Able to communicate and negotiate creative feedback effectively.

  • Able to manage your own time and work within quick deadlines.

Show us your portfolio which demonstrates excellent concept work, storyboarding and your finalized, polished work.
