Calls For Expression of Interest for the RAPS Project
Nelson City Council are seeking expressions of interest and concept designs for a technically innovative, sculptural public art project. The working title of this project is the RAPS (Relocatable Autonomous Projection Structure) Project
The project will commission a relocatable structure, that provides rigging and technical solutions to facilitate light art projection shows. The structure will also need to express its own unique sculptural form, relating well to multiple sites and light shows across Whakatū Nelson.
Public art plays an important role in the social and cultural wellbeing of the Whakatū Nelson community. In particular, light art shows have in recent years, provided multiple artistic installations on different themes for the community to experience. An example of this work can be seen in the short film above.
The successful team of artists, designers and engineers will be invited to design and construct a unique sculptural structure that can securely house two light art projectors to screen a multiplicity of light art shows in the city.
The structure will be relocated from show site to show site, exploring a variety of kaupapa in an almost endless number of locations across the city.
Submissions and concept designs must articulate past experience and knowledge of problem resolution in designing and constructing sculptural or engineered structures.
We are looking for practitioners to demonstrate how they can meet industry standards, consenting requirements and safety expectations, whilst also providing a structure that solves a series of bespoke technical solutions for light art projection.
This work should coalesce into delivery of an efficient, safe and practical multi media public art piece for the Whakatū Nelson community.
Can you think outside the box? If so, lets hear about your ideas!
